This event is already getting to me.

What do you mean it's getting to you?

[Raven hasn't really noticed the effects of the event on herself yet.]

[It sounds like Alex, but it has a more sinister tone,] She thinks you can't face your problems on your own. Why do you try? The rest of the people here are heroes. You are a waste of space.

Who...?

Alex, turn on the video.

[Alex tried turning out all the lights, but there was still a bit of a shadow left, and with the PCD it was easier to see it behind him. Alex turns his head to look at it, and the shadow's lips move even though his own don't.]

Even afraid of your own shadow. All of them. Or are you trying to just get into her bed?

[Alex slams down the PCD, hanging up at that, but not before looking sickly mortified.]

[Raven's eyes widen at first before they narrow in anger. But Alex' feed is turned off before she can answer.]

Don't listen to it, Alex. I'm on my way.

[The front door is locked, but the door out onto Alex's balcony is unlocked. Alex is hiding under his thin blanket, Volker and Hamlet both curled up with him.

[Raven rarely uses the front door when she comes to see Alex, anyway. And if the door on his balcony had been locked, she would have phased through it.

She doesn't know yet if she's affected or not (~~And of course she is XD~~) but she's understood what's going on with this event just fine. Alex's shadow now has a voice of its own and it's trying to break him. But Raven won't let it.

And above all, she won't let it use her to do it. Because she heard that last remark very well, thank you very much. So if a shadow can be punched in the face, this one is going to be very soon.

Raven enters the bedroom, closing the door behind her. Then she goes to sit down on the bed, next to the lump that Alex is forming under the blanket. She tentatively caresses his hair through the thin material.]

Your shadow sure is a loud mouth.

[Alex jumps more than he has at her touch since he arrived, peering out from under the covers at Raven. He presses his lips together, focusing on breathing calmly.]
It has a lot it can talk about.
Unlike you.

[Raven's hand jerks back as he jumps. It hurts her for some reason, as if they were strangers all over again. But when he pushes the blanket to look at her, she forces a small smile upon her lips. To reassure him. Show him she's not angry with him.]

It's just a shadow. It's not like it can actually or will ever know those things. Must be frustrating for it... Usually makes people say nasty things.

[Annoyance flashes in her eyes at the shadow's comment but she chooses to ignore it for now.]

It seems to know everything about me and it keeps telling me things I don't want to hear.
I'm just reminding you that you killed your mother. You killed Kaylee. How many children starved, were beaten, died because of you? You want to forget what you've done? Disgusting.

[Alex whines a little and whispers,] Just shut up.

[Raven glares at the shadow before realizing it's pointless. She turns back to Alex and wraps her arms protectively around him. She even lies down next to him to be more comfortable.]

You don't honestly believe that, do you Alex? Because I know you and I don't buy any of that.

[Alex doesn't answer her. He can't lie, but he doesn't want to say that he does believe the shadow. It's something he's thought many times before. Instead he just buries his face into his pillow.]

[She just holds him closer, her lips brushing against his hair.]

Yes, she's as kind as your mother, and just as likely to abandon you. Just because she holds you now doesn't mean she won't abandon you. [Alex covers his ears, whispering at the shadow, though he thinks he is only mouthing the words and thinking them.] Shut up, you're lying.

I don't want to be your mother. And I won't abandon you. [She's pressing her cheek against his shoulder blade.]

Promise?

What does a promise mean? Nothing.

Cross my heart.

[She gently forces him to turn towards her and look her in the eye.]

Can you make the same promise to me?

[He's feeling so depressed it's sending shivers up her spine.]

[Alex nods, trying to smile.]
I can.

[Her fingers brush against his skin.] That's my Alex.

And how do you expect to uphold something like that here?

[For once Alex can ignore the shadow easily. That was something he already knew, but at least he wouldn't abandon her as long as he was still in the city.]

Of course. I... I love you.
